MADIGAN REACHES AGREEMENT WITH US CREDIT FIND TO PREVENT PHONE CRAMMING Chicago - Attorney General Lisa Madigan has shut down the alleged "phone cramming" operations of a Cape Coral, Fla., credit repair company that placed unauthorized charges on the phone bills of thousands of Illinois consumers, small businesses and local governments. Through a settlement agreement reached with the Attorney General, US Credit Find and its owner, Aaron Stanz, have agreed to cease participating in the alleged deceptive practice. The settlement is the result of a lawsuit filed by Attorney General Madigan against US Credit Find in February 2009. read more

WELLS FARGO/GALLUP SURVEY: DESPITE ECONOMIC STRESS, BUSINESS OWNERS MAINTAIN PERSONAL PURSUITS The economy is taking a toll on the day-to-day lives of business owners, but most said they still have a balance between their work and outside interests. The latest Wells Fargo/Gallup Small Business Index, surveyed April 1-14, shows nearly one third (31 percent) of respondents said they're working more hours than they used to. Three-quarters (76 percent) said they feel more stress due to the economy, and the majority (60 percent) said the economy has caused them to cancel or scale back vacations due to cost or to spend more time at work. read more

FTC RAPS SEARS FOR UNLEASHING SPYWARE ON CONSUMERS The Federal Trade Commission has finally settled with Sears on allegations from 2007 that the retailer was collecting your personal data, without warning, and warehousing it with an outside third party. Sears, of course, admitted no wrongdoing, but privacy advocates screamed loud enough that the FTC stepped in and filed a formal complaint.
